Nerd Nite 31 is Wednesday, October 28 from 6-8:30 p.m.

October’s presentations include:

  • Sugar 101 with Michael Horvath
  • Indigenous Bird Names and Why They Matter with Matthew Halley

More about the topics:

Sugar 101 with Michael Horvath: Join me on a journey as we follow the story of how a humble grass juice is refined into a substance more addictive than cocaine. What once warranted its own locked furniture in the home is now a major global commodity. That’s right, it’s sugar! In this presentation we’ll walk through the various manufacturing steps to convert plant juice into premium ‘white gold’, stopping along the way to look at the physics and chemistry within the process and some of the quirky history. Like how ox blood was part of the process, or bashing equipment with a sledgehammer was encouraged, or how creative marketing turned brown sludge into your pantry’s celebrity. From juicing to crystallization, please join us as we learn some sweet facts about sugar and how it’s made.

Indigenous Bird Names and Why They Matter with Matthew Halley: Native people had names for the birds! Western scientists pretended like they didn’t. Halley will introduce us to the Lenape names for our local bird and talk about the decolonization of natural history.
