Nerd Nite 27 is Wednesday, May 27 from 6-8:30 p.m.
May’s presentations include:
- Patty Cannon and the Occupation of 1968 with G.R. Hastings
- How to Ride a Unicycle with Jonathan Abbott
- Particle Technologies with Michael Horvath
More about our speaker topics:
Patty Cannon and the Occupation of 1968: Who was Patty Cannon, and how does she relate to the 1968 occupation in Delaware? How does this female leader of a gang that kidnapped free Black people relate to something that happened about 140 years later? In this presentation, G.R. Hastings will describe who Patty Cannon was and her legacy, the 1968 demonstrations and occupation that lasted for 9 months and will connect the timelines via the Delaware governor in 1968, Charles Terry II, and the Woodburn Mansion.
How to Ride a Unicycle: Have you ever wanted to learn how to ride a unicycle? Jonathan Abbott will teach you the basics you need to get started. He will also cover graceful ways to dismount and basic steering. And the importance of a helmet! You need your noggin to unicycle.
Particle Technologies: Many industrial processes rely on small solids in some form or another, yet very few understand how they work. That gap in understanding creates problems, because what seems simple on paper turns into a laundry list of design concerns. Particle technologies is a field focused on small solid materials like powders and pellets and the many ways they behave during processing, transport, storage, and handling. From crystallization to conveying, knowing how particles are sized, classified, and influenced by different forces avoid costly failures. For instance, even something as harmless as sugar dust can become explosively dangerous under the wrong conditions. In this presentation Michael Horvath will explore the basics of particle sizing, morphology, the forces they experience, and then connect those ideas to real-world applications, with a final look at how drugs are made.
