Nerd Nite #13 ~ Hi Nerds.

Enjoy new nerdy topics on Wednesday, February 26, 6 p.m. at Wilmington Brew Works.

About this month’s talks:

Mass Effect: My Favorite Romance on The Citadel with Malcolm Nolasco

Delve into the Sci-Fi epic Mass Effect and learn about the various friends and allies you meet across Biowares trilogy of games (we don’t talk about the 4th game). Follow Commander Shepard (male) or the significantly more amazing Commander Shepard (female) as they make their way through the Milky Way Galaxy from a simple extraction mission, all the way to a battle to determine the fate of all sentient life. Along the way learn about those who shape your journey, like human Marines, to Synthetic Geth Hive Minds. Most importantly, learn which ones you’d most be compatible with romantically!

Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs with Robbie Mueller

Step back in time 300 million years ago to discover the amazing creatures that roamed the land and sea in Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs. How did the world look? What led to the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history and who survived?

Raising Seeing Eye Puppies with Liana Pope

A minivan drives up and someone hands you an adorable 7 week old fluffball of pure id with pin sharp piranha teeth and a standard issue 45 minute bladder. Your job is to adore this for a year, train basic commands, socialize the pup, and expose it to fun/real world activities (museums, NHL games, plays, nursing homes etc). Once the pup has grown into a 12-15 month old trainable well behaved gorgeous dog, you give them back to The Seeing Eye to be professionally trained and matched with their sight impared forever person.

$5 for museum members and Wilmington Brew Works members, $10 for non-members

Nerd Nite #11: Holly Daze

This month, join us for these nerdy talks:

Hark! Heralding the Muppet Christmas Carol

Patrick Wittwer, Visitor Experience Manager at Edelman Fossil Park & Museum and Nerd Nite boss

It doesn’t take a Film & Media Arts degree to see that the 1992 classic The Muppet Christmas Carol is the greatest film ever made, but Pat has one so trust him on this. In this talk, Pat offers reasons why this holiday masterpiece is the single greatest accomplishment in film history while also holding it up against some other so-called cinema classics.

Carl Akeley: the taxidermist who’s way cooler than you

Wendi Stadter, Museum Educator and taxidermy maintenance worker at DelMNS

A quick low down on the most influential taxidermist of all time. We will examine how he killed a leopard with his bare hands, invented the first compact film camera, helped found the first mountain gorilla preserve after changing the public’s view of the gorilla, and revolutionized how museums display their specimens. Basically he’s the coolest guy you’ve never heard of. Wendi is passionate about her work with mounted specimens and educating the public about our animal friends.

PSA: Preserve Your Home Videos!

Andrew Czudak

Red alert! Those old video tapes of your precious family memories won’t last forever! Tape-based media degrades over time, so if you want to keep those memories forever, the best time to digitize them was a decade ago, and the second best time is now! Join Andrew as he gives you a rundown of what the problem is, what you can do about it, and how to keep those files safe once you’ve got them!
