There’s a lot more to nail art than choosing a color. The tools, techniques, and tricks are near limitless, but this presentation will attempt a comprehensive survey of the methods of nail design. From crackle to water marbling, from powder to stamping- it will teach you the range of nail art techniques… what they are, how they look, and maybe inspire your newest finger fashion.
Debris Disks: The Rubble of a Planetary System with Inbok Yea
Over the past two decades, advancement in observational tools have allowed us to take detailed observations of objects orbiting stars. Of course, planets take up all the attention because they are sexy in terms of science news. Lesser known are debris disks, rings of dust around stars. They are tenuous, yet by clever means, astronomers have been able to observe and describe the physics behind them. So, why study or care about debris disks? Aside from caring about really niche topics being literally the job of a scientist, debris disks, due to their surprising variety of forms, can inform us about the forces within and outside a planetary system, such as that of planets, radiation, and interstellar dust. Ultimately, though, the biggest reason is that debris disks exist, there is something curious about the fact that they are even observable or there at all.
The Long Strange History of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” with Matthew Kurth
The hit song from The Tokens that many people discovered thanks to the Lion King actually has a story that stretches back to the late ’30s in Africa where an obscure artist made a record which came to the US in a crate and was re-worked multiple times. Several people have made millions of dollars from the song — none of them being the family of the man who improvised a wailing falsetto in a little recording studio in South Africa.
